For a Serious Injury or Illness:
- Do not delay treatment. Go immediately to the nearest emergency department, St. Peter's University and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital are nearest to the New Brunswick campuses.
- If you need an ambulance or emergency assistance call RU Police at 6-911 or 9-911.
- Whenever possible notify your supervisor immediately but don't delay emergency treatment.
- You must report to Occupational Health the morning of the next business day with all information provided to you in the emergency room as well as any medications prescribed.
- Occupational Health is open Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm and is closed on holidays as per the University calendar.
For all other injuries or illnesses:
- Notify your supervisor immediately.
- Your supervisor should complete a First Report of Accident and contact us at 732-932-8254.
- If you are in pain, are bleeding, or feel you must be seen immediately, report to Occupational Health promptly. Whenever possible have your supervisor call to let us know you are on the way.
- We try to see new injuries immediately and to schedule other appointments at a time convenient for you.
- Please report to Occupational Health at scheduled time.

- If Occupational is closed and you require treatment go to the nearest emergency room. You must report to Occupational Health the morning of the next business day with all information provided to you in the emergency room and any medications prescribed.
For a serious or life threatening injury or illness:
- For serious or life threatening illnesses or injuries don't delay treatment. Send employee immediately to the nearest emergency department.
- If you need an ambulance or emergency assistance call RU Police at 6-911 or 9-911.
- Contact Occupational Health at 2-8254 and advise us of the employee's injury and transfer to an emergency room.
- Complete the First Report of Accident by the end of the shift by using the Accident Database
- Have employee contact our department after the emergency visit or on the next business morning regardless of information given by the emergency department.
- Occupational Health will evaluate the employee and advise you as to their work status.
- Occupational Health is open Monday- Friday 8:00am-5:00pm and is closed on holidays as per the University calendar.
For all other injuries or illnesses:
- Complete the First Report of Accident using the database describing injury/accident on the date reported
- Contact Occupational Health 2-8254 immediately.
- If employee is in pain, bleeding or feels he/she needs to be seen immediately let us know.
- Have employee come to Occupational at appointed time.
- Employee will be given a Work Ability form with work status and follow up information they are instructed to return this work ability to supervisors immediately.
- Occupational Health is open Monday- Friday 8:00am-5:00pm and is closed on holidays as per the University calendar.
- If Occupational is closed and you require treatment go to the nearest emergency room. You must report to Occupational Health the morning of the next business day with all information provided to you in the emergency room and any medications prescribed.
- On-site physical therapy is available for work related injuries Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays by appointment and with referral only.
- Employees must be referred by an Occupational Health clinician.
- At times it will be necessary for the physical therapy to be performed at a local physical therapy center. This will be determined by the referring specialist.
- Occupational Health staff will schedule all PT appointments for you- both onsite and at physical therapy centers.
- Prescriptions related to work place injuries and illnesses are conveniently filled by Rutgers onsite pharmacy at no cost to the employee.
- Rutgers pharmacy is also available to fill your personal prescripitions and it recognizes all major insurance plans. For more information please call 732-932-7402.
- You may require evaluation and treatment by a specialist for a work related accident/injury. Occupational Health has access to many excellent specialists who are able to assist us with your care. All referrals must be made by an Occupational Health Clinician.
- Occupational Health will set up the appointment for you and give you a referral form.
- You must return to the Occupational Health Department after each appointment with a specialist.
- We will assist you with filling prescriptions, making future appointments with the specialist, scheduling physical therapy and/or necessary diagnostic tests.
