We have not yet received the injectable H1N1 flu vaccine (the H1N1 flu shot.
People with serious allergies to eggs or other vaccine components:
- cannot be safely vaccinated with either vaccine (spray or injection) at a flu clinic.
- instead they should promptly see an allergist to determine whether they can safely be vaccinated under the direct treatment and observation of an allergist and to discuss other options.
Nasal vaccine: Most healthy persons between the ages of 2-49 years old who are not pregnant and not allergic to eggs or vaccine components may receive the nasal spray vaccine.
When injectable vaccine (flu shots) becomes available, priority will be given to vaccinating the following high risk faculty, staff and university students:
- pregnant women
- people who live with or care for a child less than 6 months old,
- health care and emergency medical personnel
- persons up to 24 years old
- anyone from 25-64 years old with chronic medical conditions (including asthma) or weakened immune systems.
Healthy persons between 25-64 years old and persons older than 65 are at less risk for being infected with the H1N1 virus and will be vaccinated when additional injectable vaccine becomes available.
Persons older than 65 who do develop flu like symptoms must call their physician immediately as medications such as Tamiflu may help prevent severe flu complications.
Any person with severe flu symptoms must call their physician or go to the emergency room promptly as medications such as Tamiflu may help prevent severe flu complications.
